About the artist...It may seem on first thought that a presentation of portraits of people of different cultures, taken at disparate times, lacks coherence. I think this is not true. There is something fundamentally unchanging about human life, character and adaptability across cultures and times; this is perhaps more commonly seen in agricultural settings as the adaptations necessary for survival pose unique but common demands. Very likely, life on the land creates commonality of both visage and temperment. My home in Alabama for many years was in the Blackbelt (a ribbon of rich, dark soil extending across the southeastern United States). I spent weekends revisiting many of the places first photographed by Evans in 1936. My general interest in the social landscape slowly morphed into a more specific one: portraits. This particular interest continues after two decades. After 16 years in my adopted home, Guatemala, the portrait interest is unabated. |
