When college amiga and current Harvard grad schoolin' friend Teal said, "Spring break, woman!" I said, "Land ho!". What followed: a hopelessly unplanned, downright random trip to Guatemala. Thanks to our travel agents, Lonely Planet: Guatemala and The Rough Guide to Guatemala, we embarked first to Chichi, via a screaming, gas-belching chicken bus, and then off for a 3-day stint at the Hotel Atitlan right outside of Panajachel, on epic Lake Atitlan. Next, off to Antigua, at monastery-cum-hotel Casa Santo Domingo. We swam, hiked, mountain biked through coffee plantations and, yes, climbed an ACTIVE VOLCANO...

Feliz Navidad from Guatemala, Tikal
Well there was no mistaking the moment Christmas began in Flores. At 12 midnight the fireworks started going off from I would say nearly every house in Flores and Santa Helena. The building next to us had a couple of pyromaniacs setting off all manners of fireworks most of which did not launch out of their mostly closed in area, hence they kept firing them down their hall and needing to run from the mess they created. OK, I was jealous; I'll admit it. Flores which is surrounded on three sides by Santa Helena and houses on the other shore of the lake was an unbelieveable sight...

Tikal, Guatemala Birding trip
I was awakened again at 4:30am by the knocking for the sunrise tour. I should have known it would be a daily occurrence. Ah, well, I was getting used to going to bed soon after dark and getting up before dawn.
Today promised to be the first in which I could bird all day long, without having to be concerned about checking in or out of a hotel. I went through my morning routine, making sure I had extra food and water for the day...

Why Choose Guatemala As A Study Abroad Destination?
Guatemala is a beautiful country rich in history and cultural diversity. From ancient Mayan ruins to Spanish colonial monuments, there is no lack of sights to see, things to experience and ways to study the culture including many study abroad programs.
The indigenous population speaks over 23 different languages,
not to mention the Spanish language. The landscape ranges from
Caribbean to volcanic to urban to jungle. Up until recently the
country had been veritably undiscovered by North American and
European tourists because of its prolonged civil war and general
instability....

Ancient Antigua - Guatemala
...The city was, by the way, gorgeous. A very old colonial place with incredible architecture, cobbled streets & beautiful inner courtyards in nearly every house/building that you walked by. It had anice feeling to it & felt very safe walking around (even at night). The only negative thing about it was that it was overrun with tourists ! It´s known a "Gringolandia" because of the number of North americans living & working there & it really has been the first place we´ve been to where we´ve seen so many other travellers !...

Back To My Chapina Roots -- Going to Guatemala with my father
It’s been a long trek to get where I am with my dad. My parents divorced in 1989, when I was 7 years old. A couple years after my parents split, my dad took off to Guatemala. Even though he had four kids in San Francisco, he felt like he had nothing to live for here. My father was born in Guatemala and moved to San Francisco at the age of 13, to join the rest of his brothers and sisters.
Soon after joining his family in the Mission District, he ran away because of an unstable household. He jumped from juvenile hall to foster homes to group homes and eventually earned his diploma. My dad was a legend in the late 70s and early 80s in San Francisco....

Well, I am here...I think....
Well, Afteer hanging in the Dallas airport for 5 hours (this airport is like a museum), changing departure gates three times, and being told my Canadian visa (uh, its still a visa) couldnt be used to get money out of their American ATMs, I finally made it to Guatemala city last night. The airport in Guatemala is like being dropped off in a half-finished building, and I just had to follow everyone else to get out. I met a nice man on the airplane who didn{t speak English, he was going back to Guatemala and he told me I spoke Spanish really well...

Its all about the past...
Ok, so I now have a routine here in Xela. Get up, got to breakfast, get served food I cant eat (today it was eggs and hot dogs-the foods I am most allergic to...aka hate), pretend to enjoy it while I look for places to hide it, go to class for 5 hours, go to the internet cafe (2 hours for .50), go walk around and hang out at the bank, do some studying, try to eat dinner, go study some more, decide I am going to take some pictures, take some pictures...
