

Palacio de Leonor is a 16th century mansion that was built and occupied by the daughter of the Spanish conqueror, Don Pedro de Alvarado. Doña Leonor, the first mestiza born in Guatemala, was well known for her inner strength and resolve during a very tumultuous time in history. Once you step behind the heavy oak doors of the Palacio, you will enter a time 500 years past and experience the splendor of Doña Leonor's home. | The Palacio was built adjacent to the Cathedral of Santiago, or Central Cathedral, between 1541 and 1543 by Doña Leonor de Alvarado and Don Francisco de la Cueva. Doña Leonor was the daughter of Don Pedro de Alvarado and the Tlaxcalan Indian princess, Tecuilhuatzin - Doña Luisa. |
Regional architects, historians and designers were consulted about faithfulness to the original colonial style.. Descendants of skilled artisans were enlisted to utilize crafts passed down for generations. |
